Draft a written version of your story
Today, you’ll be drafting a written version of your story.
We’ll do this by going through 3 exercises; each one designed to help you get a messy first draft out on paper—so that you can look at it, react to it, and continue to iterate on your writing.
As with discovering your Zone of Genius, this exercise will call on you to be honest, vulnerable, and a little bold with your story.
At this point, you’ve explored and identified the four elements of your Career Story:
- You’ve mapped your values.
- You’ve reflected on your best stuff (achievements, experiences, etc.)
- You’ve explored your Zone of Genius, or asked others to share what it’s like to work with you.
- You’ve drafted a Career Mission Statement so that you convey your vision or direction to others.
Start with Fill-in-the-blank Templates
Use this space to practice drafting out your story (or pieces of it) once you’ve completed all 4 elements of Storytelling.
- Start with your MISSION statement.
- Add in 2-3 ACHIEVEMENTS, experiences, events (from The Best Stuff, or LinkedIn/Resume.)
- Add in 2-3 VALUES (either lived, or learned, through the achievements.)
- Add language from Zone of GENIUS and/or Genius Campaign Feedback.
- What it’s like to work with you? (e.g. How you affect the people around you?)
- What your impact was? (e.g. Did you use your ZoG? Did you bring people together?)
